To begin at the end: the end of a 14 year career in television, the vast majority of that spent as a grip. It’s been a long time coming and not an easy decision to make, but I’ve decided to retire from gripping and start a whole new career.

I say ‘retire’ but it’s not like I can just kick-back and live off my pension. Pension? What’s one of those? Do freelancers even have pensions?

I use the word ‘retire’ as one can come out of retirement and work the occasional day, here and there. One really can’t come back from ‘I quit!’

Now free of the Cruel Mistress that is the Media Industry, I find myself with enough time on my hands to have a life – both on and off-line.  I’d like to use some of that time to pass on a few bits of advice from my so-called ‘experience.’  I’ll always be the first one to tell you that I’m no expert, but then neither are the vast majority of people who teach in the media colleges around the country.

I’d like to use the rest of the time to rant about whatever gets my goat on any given day – after all, this wouldn’t be a proper blog is there wasn’t some whingeing involved.
